“They went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.”
Matthew 2:9-11
On seeing you, we’re overjoyed,
The star-marked aim of wandering.
We open our treasures and give you our gifts.
Not myrrh, or gold, or frankincense –
like kings of old, for we feel poor.
On seeing you, we’re overjoyed:
perhaps you will have gifts for us,
if we persuade you to be kind.
We open our treasures and give you our gifts.
Can we cease wandering and rest,
if you’re what we’ve been searching for?
On seeing you we’re overjoyed.
Exchanged for water, jars and trust
You offer joy, a party, wine.
We open our treasures and give you our gifts.
And it’s not fair, or won, or learned,
this wedding feast we haven’t earned.
On seeing you, we’re overjoyed.
We open our treastures and give you our gifts.
