We are starting the process of converting our basement apartment into a mini retreat space. We deeply value hospitality, and desire to use our home to create welcome and connection. For most of the time we’ve lived in our house, we’ve had people unrelated by blood or covenant living in the home with us, in community, as part of our chosen extended family. We’re excited to try a new way of living out our value, converting the rental apartment into a little urban haven, where people can breath deep, let the inner noise fall silent, and connect to themselves, others, and God.
How will this work? We don’t entirely know. This is an experiment. What if we renovated the space into an urban sanctuary and made it available in a pay-what-you-wish form? What might happen? Is there even a demand for a space like this? Will we pour a lot of money into something that sits empty?
To be honest, I’m a little nervous nothing will come of it: a big idea that sputters out.
But greater than my fear of failure is desire: desire to set a table for retreat, formation, connection. Desire to help people make space for what matters most. Desire to walk with people into growing more fully into who God has made them to be. Maybe nothing will come of this–but maybe people will be blessed and transformed this space, maybe it will bless and transform us. That’s reason enough to try.
